Living in a small space does not mean you have to limit your Christmas spirit! Here are some tried and true ways to achieve a cozy, holiday home, even when you’re working with small square footage.
Redecorating for the holidays is probably my favourite time of the year (said every girl, ever) – but truly, the joy that a flocked tree, twinkling lights and garland bring to my heart is on another level. Couple that with ordering a Holiday Starbucks drink, and I’m in basic-girl-heaven. Over the years, I’ve mastered adding simple touches of holiday decor to maximize my small living space, and in a 2-bedroom apartment, I’ve had to get creative! Grab a warm bevy (preferably something mocha & minty) and let’s dig into the 6 most effective ways to add Christmas decor to your home this holiday season.
1. Move Furniture
Don’t be afraid to move furniture pieces around to make space. Do you have a chair that could live in your bedroom temporarily? Perfect! Or perhaps you can take advantage of mom and dad’s a storage space to move any unnecessary pieces out. This includes clearing out any decor from previous seasons from shelves. Your faux fiddle leaf fig tree? Probably okay to take out of your main living space until Christmas is over.
2. Find creative solutions for traditional items
I knew moving into our first apartment that having a Christmas tree was a non-negotiable. Luckily, my tree assembles branch by branch, so I’m able to quite literally only put up half of my tree. I push it against the wall and fill in the back with extra branches and you cannot tell it’s only half a tree! The last few years I’ve seen half-trees available though, which would be perfect if you’re looking to add it to a small space. Even if you move somewhere larger, the half tree could be perfect in an entry-way or basement when you eventually “upgrade”.

3. Utilize wall and window space
Whether you’re hanging a wreath or hanging your past years’ christmas cards on a string, using wall space for decor is a great way to add festive touches without taking up too much room. We don’t have a balcony, so I’ve opted for window lights to bring the Christmas cheer inside-out! These window string lights are the perfect fit in my apartment window – and they are a great price!

4. Create small holiday vignettes
Find a few places in your home where you can create small clusters of Christmas decor. Think: coffee table, entry-way, media console or bar cart. Keep decor in clusters of 3-5 (odd numbers are always best) and stick to your theme that you planned at the start of the season. Need some help in that department? 5. Keep it simple!
Minimalist rustic decor is a huge trend for Christmas this year. Less is more! That applies to colour palettes, garland, branches or picks, and the amount of decorative accessories you bring into your home. Trust me, you can do so much with what you probably already own! Take inventory of what you have before heading out to your closest Homesense (I know how tempting it is!). But, your wallet and your small space (and lack of storage) will thank you for it!
